Jill Young

Jill Young, 1928-2012, was an accomplished painter and sculptor who trained at Wimbledon Art School in the late 1940s, under Sir Gerald Cooper (1898-1975). Her style was traditional and figurative with a strong empathy for her subjects of flowers and landscapes; rural life is a predominant interest in her work.

She was an inspirational and perceptive teacher and taught for several years following the completion of her Art Teachers Diploma (ATD), London University. She produced a prodigious quantity of work during her career and occasionally exhibited paintings in London and the provinces but mostly she worked to commission. In 2011, fifty three of Jill's Pembrokeshire Standing Stone paintings were bought by the National Library of Wales. In 2015, Carreg Gwalch published her book on the Pembrokeshire Standing Stones project.

In retirement, her facility for mural painting and trompe l'oeil were realised in the work undertaken on her historic home: Bryn-y-môr House, Cardigan, where both her conservation skills and an acknowledged talent for garden design were added to her many achievements.
